An exploration of the battlefields of the south and a gathering at the Long Tan Cross on 18 August.

Sun 15 Aug - Fri 27 Aug 2021

This tour is for anyone interested in post-World War Two Vietnam. It is ideal for those with previous Viet Nam battlefields experience because we go to places most tours do not even know exist.

Our exploration of Ho Chi Minh City is unique, going way beyond the Post Office and cathedral, revealing what the War Remnants Museum really was, seeing the secret arms cache near the Free World Headquarters and visiting the church that gave Ngo Dinh Diem harbour during the 1963 coup.

Naturally, we visit the Australian base area and gather at the Long Tan Replica Cross on the Anniversary of the battle.

We also see the Coral and Balmoral battle sites.

We will also visit the stunning Rung Sat mangrove forest, home of the 10th Sapper Regiment and see a replica of their base area.

We will also travel to the border area near Cambodia to see An Loc, site of a three month siege battle during the Spring- Summer Offensive in 1972 and historic Loc Ninh on the Cambodian border, where the the US, ROV, DRV and NLF negotiated the implementation of the Paris Peace Accords in 1973.

Vietnam linguist and history expert WALTER PEARSON will personally lead this tour. Walter is unique. He is a two-tour Vietnam Veteran, twice wounded in action. In 1969, he served as a combat soldier with a Forward Observers Party with 5RAR. His tour was cut short by a nasty mine incident. He returned to Vietnam in 1972 as a qualified interpreter which required him to travel to many parts of Vietnam including the POW Camp on Phu Quoc Island. He was among the last Australian troops out of Vietnam in December 1972. Walter went on to study Chinese language and East Asian history and philosophy at the ANU. He worked as a journalist and returned to Vietnam in 1989 to report on the dedication of the replica Long Tan Cross at the famous battle site. He wrote the acclaimed TV documentary Vietnam Minefield doing some of the first TV interviews with the Australians’ erstwhile enemy. Walter lived and travelled in Vietnam  throughout the period from 2000. He was central to the search for Australia’s Missing in Action, advised television companies and participated in television programs including, Australian Story, In Their Footsteps, Foreign Correspondent, Who Do You Think You Are and the makers of the The Team. He has led tours by car, bus, train, plane and bike throughout Vietnam over that time, including tours with Vietnam Veterans, visiting Australian Navy ships and groups from the Australian Staff and Command College. .
